This fall, Summit Christian Academy took a significant step forward in media education with the expansion of its Media Lab, providing students with cutting-edge tools to hone their skills in live multicam production, film production, and podcasting. The updated facility offers a dynamic learning environment where students can engage in real-world media creation while building a strong foundation in professional interviewing techniques—both in front of and behind the camera.
The Media Lab has been designed as a gateway to understanding the vocabulary, responsibilities, and technical skills essential for various media-related opportunities. Whether students are working on church projects, mission trip documentation, or class assignments, they can now develop expertise that translates into meaningful contributions and future careers.
The Media Lab’s multicam setup now includes two professional-grade Canon 4K studio cameras, ideal for in-studio productions, theatrical recordings, and sports broadcasting. The upgrade also features enhanced wireless microphones, offering students the chance to produce high-quality audio and video content.
Melissa Tapperson, Media Club sponsor, notes the enthusiasm among students: “The students are eager to shift into a higher gear. They have really grown in developing team responsibilities that come with hard deadlines. They are eager to deliver a more professional broadcast that is enhanced by the more professional technology.”
From operating high-end equipment to managing production schedules, students are not only acquiring technical proficiency but also critical soft skills like teamwork, communication, and time management.
Innovation Director Paul Austin underscores the importance of staying ahead in a rapidly evolving industry: “Summit is in an ideal spot to provide educational spaces like the Media Lab and to quickly take advantage of updates in industry tech that [are] the foundation of so many professions. With this setup, we can draw from a curriculum most students can’t participate in until university-level film classes.”
The Media Lab is more than just a place for students to experiment; it’s a springboard for innovation and professional growth. By integrating professional-grade tools and real-world scenarios into the curriculum, Summit is preparing its students for future success in media and beyond.
With the Media Lab’s enhanced capabilities, SCA continues to empower its students to explore their creative potential. Whether they aspire to careers in media, storytelling, or broadcasting, the lab provides a solid foundation for their ambitions. The hands-on experience gained here ensures that they are not only prepared for their next steps but also capable of leading the way in their chosen fields. As the Media Lab opens its doors to a new chapter of possibilities, it is clear that Summit is committed to nurturing the next generation of storytellers and innovators.
