Summit Christian Academy > Academics > Eagle Engineers Building Castles

Students in Mr. Landers’ Engineering 1 class at Summit Christian Academy are blending creativity, technology, and problem-solving as they bring digital designs to life. Using OnShape, a 3D CAD (computer-aided design) program, they recently completed a castle project that reinforced key engineering skills while introducing new challenges.

The assignment built upon concepts students have been developing since last semester, such as reading and creating precise design plans. Engineers must carefully plan and refine their ideas before bringing them to life, and this project gave students a hands-on opportunity to experience that process.

To begin, students were required to research at least two real or fictional castles, analyzing their architectural features and historical significance. Using this research, they sketched and labeled their own unique castle designs, ensuring they incorporated key elements such as a motte (raised earthwork), crenellations (battlement features), a keep (central stronghold), and a tower with a pointed roof.

In addition to applying their research, students had to demonstrate their proficiency with at least six different Inventor Modeling tools within OnShape, all while constructing their castle from a single part file. This required careful planning and precision, mirroring the problem-solving process used by professional engineers.

Once their digital models were complete, students used a 3D printer—generously gifted to the school by Mr. Paul Austin—to bring their creations to life. This transformation from concept to physical object helped students see firsthand how engineering and design play a role in real-world innovation.

This project not only strengthened students’ technical abilities but also provided a valuable lesson in the importance of thoughtful design—an idea that reflects God’s own work as the ultimate Creator. Just as engineers must carefully plan and execute their designs, scripture reminds us that God designed the world with order and purpose: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). By engaging in the creative process, students are developing skills that allow them to reflect God’s design and innovation in their own work.

Through projects like this, Summit Christian Academy continues to equip students with practical skills while fostering a biblical worldview, encouraging them to see engineering as a way to glorify God through creativity, precision, and problem-solving.
