Summit Christian Academy > Events > Seize the Stage! BTS of Newsies

Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Summit Theatre Company is hard at work bringing the beloved musical Newsies to life, and behind the scenes, students are pushing themselves to new heights in preparation for opening night. From learning lines to perfecting choreography, the journey to the stage is filled with challenges, triumphs, and unforgettable moments.

The Art of Preparation

Learning Lines & Songs

The first step in embodying a character is learning the script and songs. Students dedicate time both in and outside of rehearsal to memorize their lines, making sure they not only know the words but also understand their character’s emotions and motivations. “Practicing lines on my own time has helped me manage my schedule better,” one student shared. The catchy, high-energy score of Newsies is a favorite among cast members, with many citing the soundtrack as one of the best parts of the production.

Mastering Choreography

The fast-paced, high-energy dance numbers in Newsies are no small feat! Under expert direction, students are learning complex routines that require stamina, precision, and teamwork. “When it all pieces together, it looks very cool,” a student remarked. Outside of rehearsal, many students practice choreography in their free time to ensure they can execute the moves seamlessly on stage.

Preparing for an Audition

Before landing a role, every student first had to prepare for auditions, a nerve-wracking but essential part of the process. Learning a monologue, preparing a song, and rehearsing in front of peers are all steps that push students beyond their comfort zones, helping them develop confidence that extends far beyond the stage.

Behind the Scenes: The Magic of Tech

Building Sets and Props

While the cast brings the story to life, the crew works tirelessly to create an immersive world on stage. Students take on the challenge of constructing sturdy, functional, and era-appropriate sets that will transport audiences to 1899 New York City.

Costumes, Hair, and Makeup

Bringing characters to life isn’t just about acting—it’s about looking the part, too. Students assist with costume fittings, style period-appropriate hairdos, and learn makeup techniques to transform into newsboys, business tycoons, and more. “The costumes and tech week are my favorite parts,” one student enthused.

Organizing Backstage

A smooth show isn’t just about what happens on stage—it’s about what happens behind the scenes. Students take responsibility for organizing props, ensuring quick costume changes, and helping everything run like clockwork. “Even though I’m in crew, I still feel like I’m part of the show,” a student shared proudly.

Lighting, Sound, and Tech

The technical aspects of Newsies—from lighting cues to sound effects—require precision and expertise. Tech crew members work to master complex equipment that ensures every scene is lit perfectly, and every note is heard clearly by the audience.

More Than a Show: Character Development Through Theatre

Theatre isn’t just about performing—it’s about growth. Through the process of putting on Newsies, students are learning valuable life skills:

  • Communication & Problem-Solving: Whether discussing a scene with a castmate or working with the tech team to fix a set piece, students learn to communicate effectively and solve problems collaboratively.
  • Time Management: Balancing rehearsals with homework, family time, and other activities is a challenge, but one that teaches valuable skills in prioritization.
  • Character Development: Actors think deeply about how their characters would react in different situations, adding depth to their performances.
  • Leadership & Responsibility: Some students assist Ms. Coblentz in running rehearsals, ensuring that everyone stays on task and that the production moves forward smoothly.
  • Confidence & Teamwork: “Theatre has improved my self-confidence with speaking and performing in front of others,” a student shared. Another added, “Being able to work with so many different people that I wouldn’t talk to normally has been amazing.”

The Best Part? Everything!

When asked about their favorite part of theatre and Newsies, students had plenty to say:

  • “I love the show we are doing! The characters are so unlike anything I’ve played before, and it is so fun!”
  • “Theatre is such an amazing class. I love to act.”
  • “I love seeing the audience’s reactions.”
  • “I can be myself, and there’s no judgment.”
  • “Working with everyone from middle school through high school as well as Ms. Coblentz is amazing.”
  • “Being with others and making friendships, especially during tech week.”
  • “The music and choreography make Newsies so exciting!”
  • “When all the hard work pays off, it’s the best feeling in the world.”

Summit Theatre Company’s Newsies is shaping up to be an unforgettable experience for both cast and crew. As the students work tirelessly to perfect every detail, they are not only preparing for a fantastic show but also growing as individuals. With passion, dedication, and teamwork, this production is sure to be a smash hit.
