Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Summit Theatre Company is hard at work bringing the beloved musical Newsies to life, and behind the scenes, students are pushing themselves to new heights in preparation for opening night. From learning lines to perfecting choreography, the journey to the stage is filled with challenges, triumphs, and unforgettable moments.
The first step in embodying a character is learning the script and songs. Students dedicate time both in and outside of rehearsal to memorize their lines, making sure they not only know the words but also understand their character’s emotions and motivations. “Practicing lines on my own time has helped me manage my schedule better,” one student shared. The catchy, high-energy score of Newsies is a favorite among cast members, with many citing the soundtrack as one of the best parts of the production.
The fast-paced, high-energy dance numbers in Newsies are no small feat! Under expert direction, students are learning complex routines that require stamina, precision, and teamwork. “When it all pieces together, it looks very cool,” a student remarked. Outside of rehearsal, many students practice choreography in their free time to ensure they can execute the moves seamlessly on stage.
Before landing a role, every student first had to prepare for auditions, a nerve-wracking but essential part of the process. Learning a monologue, preparing a song, and rehearsing in front of peers are all steps that push students beyond their comfort zones, helping them develop confidence that extends far beyond the stage.
While the cast brings the story to life, the crew works tirelessly to create an immersive world on stage. Students take on the challenge of constructing sturdy, functional, and era-appropriate sets that will transport audiences to 1899 New York City.
Bringing characters to life isn’t just about acting—it’s about looking the part, too. Students assist with costume fittings, style period-appropriate hairdos, and learn makeup techniques to transform into newsboys, business tycoons, and more. “The costumes and tech week are my favorite parts,” one student enthused.
A smooth show isn’t just about what happens on stage—it’s about what happens behind the scenes. Students take responsibility for organizing props, ensuring quick costume changes, and helping everything run like clockwork. “Even though I’m in crew, I still feel like I’m part of the show,” a student shared proudly.
The technical aspects of Newsies—from lighting cues to sound effects—require precision and expertise. Tech crew members work to master complex equipment that ensures every scene is lit perfectly, and every note is heard clearly by the audience.
Theatre isn’t just about performing—it’s about growth. Through the process of putting on Newsies, students are learning valuable life skills:
