Summit Christian Academy > Academics > SCA Boasts Exceptional Science Program
Science at SCA is a dynamic and exploratory program where students are challenged to think critically, creatively and methodically.  In the secondary program, for every topic discussed, there will be one or more hands-on experiences related to that topic.  Students in all sciences will be executing experiments following the scientific method in both a guided context and in an open-ended and observation-led context.  Whether it be students in Biology answering the question, “What causes a seed to germinate?” or an Environmental student taking a “Dream Walk” to come up with better ways to steward the resources on our campus, students are taught to dream, design and implement solutions and ideas in and out of the lab. Students are also trained to keep a detailed lab notebook in all classes.  Some of the many experiences that SCA students will be involved with include…

Biology – dissections, designing a sustainable microenvironment, macromolecule “murder” lab, bacteria lab, mushroom exploration…
Chemistry – Forming and Naming Ionic Compounds Lab, Molecular Modeling, Ionic Flame Demonstrations, Chemical Equilibrium Design Lab…
Physics – too many to name as Physics is the most basic science, is almost completely observational and experimental and all other sciences come from Physics
Environmental Science – Grant writing, Macroinvertebrate Collections, Water Quality Testing, Renewable Energy Experiments…

In addition, science students will have discussions about ethics, faith and science.  After the resurrection of Jesus, Thomas said to the disciples “‘Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”  Thomas wanted science, which is completely observational and testable.  Jesus revealed Himself to Thomas and said “‘Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” Thomas said to him, ‘My Lord and my God!’ Then Jesus told him, ‘Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.'” (John 20:24-29) Faith is believing what the Lord says even if we can’t observe and test it.  However, God is so gracious and reveals Himself through what is seen, observed and testable (Romans 1:20).  So, in essence, science is God being gracious and patient with us to help us increase our faith.  Our prayer is that SCA students’ faith will grow as they move through the science track.
