Summit Christian Academy > Academics > Elementary > Students Shine Bright in Shelter Service

This April, Mrs. Glenn’s fourth-grade class put their faith into action through their annual impact project: collecting donations for TX Humane Heroes, a local no-kill animal shelter. Their efforts culminated in a special Saturday outing, where the entire class delivered the supplies and spent time loving on the animals they had worked so hard to support.

Over the course of the month, the students collected an impressive variety of supplies—dry dog and cat food, toys, bedding, treats, towels, leashes, puppy pads, blankets, and plenty of peanut butter, a favorite among the dogs! Their generosity overflowed, and the shelter staff were deeply moved by the class’s commitment and kindness.

As part of their visit, students were able to tour the shelter, interact with both cats and puppies, and hear from Christian, the shelter’s PR Director, who later highlighted the class on the shelter’s social media to thank them for their efforts.

More than just a service project, this experience offered a powerful opportunity for students to live out biblical principles. Proverbs 12:10 tells us, “The righteous care for the needs of their animals,” and through their actions, the fourth graders demonstrated just that—showing compassion, selflessness, and stewardship over God’s creation.

“This is the second year I’ve done this with my class,” said Mrs. Glenn. “It’s incredible to see how eager the students are to serve and how much joy they find in helping others, even animals. Giving up their Saturday morning wasn’t a burden for them—it was a blessing.”

At Summit, we believe in teaching students to be the hands and feet of Jesus, and this project was a beautiful reflection of that mission. The fourth-grade class has reminded us all that service, no matter how small it may seem, can make a big impact when done with love and purpose.
