Summit Christian Academy > Academics > Grant Award Fuels Stewardship and Sustainability on Campus

We are thrilled to announce that our campus has received funding through the Bright Green Future Grants Program, which supports innovative environmental projects that inspire lifelong stewardship. This grant provides an exciting opportunity for our students to combine scientific understanding and biblical principles as they care for the world around them.

A Balanced Approach: Birdhouses for Environmental and Spiritual Stewardship

This project focuses on building birdhouses to attract the endangered Golden-Cheeked Warbler, a species vital to the balance of our ecosystem. These birdhouses will serve two essential purposes:

  1. Supporting Ecosystem Health: Golden-Cheeked Warblers feed on insects like caterpillars, spiders, ants, and moths. By welcoming these birds, we can naturally reduce the overpopulation of bugs on campus, creating a safer and more comfortable environment for students. This is a practical example of applying science to solve real-world problems.
  2. Conserving a Unique Creation: The Golden-Cheeked Warbler is endangered due to habitat loss. By providing birdhouses and planting Juniper trees—key to their nesting and feeding habits—we are actively working to restore their population, fulfilling both ecological responsibility and our biblical calling to “care for the earth and all that is in it” (Psalm 24:1).

Student-Led and Faculty-Advised

The grant application for this inspiring project was thoughtfully written by Summit junior Zak Lamb, whose vision and dedication to environmental stewardship brought this opportunity to life. The project will be implemented by the eleventh-grade Environmental Science students, with Mrs. Tapperson serving as their advisor.

This collaborative effort highlights the power of student initiative and the importance of mentorship in achieving meaningful outcomes. Through their work, Zak and his peers are setting an example of how faith, education, and environmental responsibility can come together to make a tangible impact.

Faith and Science in Action

This project gives students the opportunity to put their learning into practice. Through constructing birdhouses, planting trees, and monitoring their impact, students will witness firsthand how scientific knowledge and biblical stewardship intersect.

From a biblical perspective, the project reflects our responsibility as caretakers of God’s creation, as outlined in Genesis 2:15: “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” From a scientific standpoint, it highlights how every species plays a role in maintaining the balance of ecosystems, reminding us of the interconnectedness of life on Earth.

Educating and Inspiring the Community

Our students will also lead efforts to educate the campus community about the importance of the Golden-Cheeked Warbler. Using visual aids and data, they will demonstrate how these birds help control pests and enhance the environment. This project provides a platform to show how scientific solutions, like natural pest control through bird populations, can work hand-in-hand with a biblical perspective that values all life as part of God’s intricate design.

Stewardship and Sustainability in Action

This initiative is about more than controlling bugs—it’s about fostering a deeper understanding of our role in caring for creation. By providing a safe habitat for the Golden-Cheeked Warbler, we are living out the biblical call to stewardship while applying science to create a healthier campus environment.

As Matthew 6:26 reminds us: “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” This verse underscores the care God has for all His creation, inspiring us to act as faithful stewards in both practical and meaningful ways.

Looking to the Future

We are deeply grateful to the Bright Green Future Grants Program for making this project possible and to Zak Lamb for his leadership in securing this grant. With the guidance of Mrs. Tapperson and the hands-on efforts of our Environmental Science students, we look forward to seeing the transformative impact of this initiative.

Together, we are creating a campus that reflects both God’s glory and the beauty of scientific discovery, working toward a better future for our community and the world.
